Cynthia Carr, Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz. New York: Bloomsbury, 2012
David Wojnarowicz’s life and work has attracted much scholarship and in-depth writing.
Three retrospectives of David’s work have included thoughtful catalogs: David Wojnarowicz: Tongues of Flame, 1990; Fever: The Art of David Wojnarowicz, 1996; and David Wojnarowicz: History Keeps Me Awake at Night, 2018.
Cultural historian Cynthia Carr’s biography of David, Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz, similarly draws deep from David’s journals and archives (and received a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Memoir/Biography, in 2013).
His audio and written journals (now in the New York University Fales Downtown Collection) have been edited by his peers into compelling compilations, including: The Waterfront Journals; Weight of the Earth: The Tape Journals of David Wojnarowicz; and In The Shadow of the American Dream: The Diaries of David Wojnarowicz.
