Our friends at Visual AIDShave been using art to fight AIDS for over thirty-five years—supporting artists living with HIV/AIDS while preserving the legacy of artists lost to the ongoing epidemic.
For three decades, PositiveEAST has worked to improve the quality of life among individuals and communities in London affected by HIV. We are proud to provide financial support to these two important organizations.
“In the Shadow of the American Dream” at MoMA
“In the Shadow of the American Dream,” has opened at The Museum of Modern Art. Curators explain this MoMA collections exhibition “[recalls] a moment when many lives were lost and entire neighborhoods were razed. The works… conjure the eloquent rage of a generation of artists who lived, to quote David Wojnarowicz, “in the shadow of the American dream.” Included is David’s Fire (1987) from MoMA’s collection, Martin Wong’s Houston Street (1986), and recently acquired works by Agosto Machado, Donald Moffett, and Marion Scemama.
In his moving essay for ArtReview, “One Day This Boy…”: How David Wojnarowicz Gave Me Life, Khashayar J. Khabushani writes about his profound connection with David Wojnarowicz as a young man struggling with his own sexuality. A struggle he explores again in his debut novel, I Will Greet the Sun Again, about a young Iranian American boy’s cultural and sexual awakening. As he explains, …the things I write about are so fraught, and there was so much silence around them for so long, that after seeing [David] break his own silences or the silences imposed on him, there was really no going back.
Meet our latest David Wojnarowicz Fellow, Sydney Lipner (Pratt Institute 2026) who is pursuing a BFA/MA in Art and Design Education with a focus in drawing. Sydney will use their fellowship to explore current perspectives in arts education with the goal of helping us raise awareness of David’s work in diverse cultural contexts and a variety of educational settings.
Board Chair Anita Vitale says: “We are delighted to work with Sydney, whose deep curiosity and commitment to education promises to help us share David’s legacy with new audiences and rising generations.”
