November 17, 1989: NEA chair John Frohnmayer reinstates funding of Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing after specifying that NEA funds cannot be used to underwrite the catalog featuring David’s essay “Post Cards from America: X-Rays from Hell.” The catalog is funded, instead, by a grant from The Mapplethorpe Foundation. The New York Times publishes an editorial condeming Frohnmayer’s handling of the situation.
