Tongues of Flame, curated by Barry Blinderman opens at University Galleries, Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. Organized by Curator Barry Blinderman, the exhibit is the first major museum retrospective of David’s work (1979 to 1989). The exhibit prompts Donald Wildmon, of Mississippi’s American Family Association, to misrepresent David’s art as pornography in a mass mailing objecting to the exhibit’s support from the National Endowment of the Arts. David sues the AFA and wins a symbolic $1 judgment.
