August 10, 1988: Artist Paul Thek, friend to David and Peter Hujar, dies of AIDS. Thek studied at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute and Cooper Union School of the Arts in New York. He dated Peter Hujar and traveled with him to Palermo in 1962. He worked in installation and (wax) sculpture and was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to Italy in 1967. He began teaching at Cooper Union in 1976. Susan Sontag dedicated Against Interpretation in 1966 and AIDS and its Metaphors, 1988 to Thek.
