July 29, 1992: Just a week after David’s death, hundreds of friends and activists march through the East Village in his honor.
Moved by the concept of the “political funeral” in David’s Close to the Knives, members of ACT UP affinity group the Marys—Joy Episalla and Carrie Yamaoka—organize the first of its kind for David. Hundreds assemble outside David’s loft to demonstrate carrying a banner, snare drums, sunflowers, and reproductions of David’s work. The evening ends with a moment of silence and funeral pyre near Cooper Union.
