David made the film Heroin with friends Jesse Hultberg and Brian Butterick on the piers along the Hudson River in 1981. “Marion called me to consult on her film,” Hultberg explains, “and I sat through the editing process with her and François Pain in Paris. Marion had salvaged the raw footage of Heroin, which I barely remembered making, when she was searching the archives at Fales Library for her own film [Self-Portrait in 23 Rounds: a Chapter in David Wojnarowicz’s Life, 1989–1991]. Hultberg worked with Marion’s partner, the editor François Pain to make a version of Heroin with the new footage. He explains: “I was able to add one of the oldest 3 Teens Kill 4 recordings in existence entitled “3 Teens Kill 4 No Motive” as a sound track. The song and the film were created nearly in the same year and were pretty much covering the same subject, so it seemed like a perfect match.”
