1979: David begins photographing his “Arthur Rimbaud in New York” series of gelatin-silver prints en masse, with friends Brian Butterick and John Hall as models. Butterick appears in a Rimbaud mask: on 42nd St between 7th & 8th Ave; in front of cow carcasses in meatpacking district; on the subway; on the Hudson piers; with the tic-tac-toe chicken at Chinatown Game Arcade; outside Terminal Bar; shooting heroin. John Hall appears: masturbating; with a bandaged hand; in front of a Jean Dubuffet sculpture.
