1976: Peter Hujar publishes Portraits in Life and Death, a monograph of photos taken from 1963 to ’75 with an introduction by Susan Sontag. The images include twenty-nine portraits of Hujar’s Lower East Side friends, William Burroughs and Divine among them, along with twelve portraits of 19th century Sicilian mummies from the catacombs of a Palermo church. David suggests he was influenced by this monograph even before meeting Peter.
