August, 1971: David goes to Outward Bound Camp on Hurricane Island off the coast of Maine for several weeks. He feels isolated and hungry but given three days to fend for himself, he forages for wild berries, cattails, glasswort, clams and limpets while fantasizing about eating Blimpie’s burgers and licorice. He befriends a snake. He returns home just before his 17th birthday but does not return to school.
