June 28, 1970: On the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, New York City activists—including the newly formed Gay Activists Alliance, Radicalesbians, and Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR)—called for the “Christopher Street Liberation Day March,” the U.S.’s first gay pride parade, co-opting the pink triangle as a symbol of gay pride.
