“The Four Elements,” Gracie Mansion, 1987

Gracie Mansion Gallery’s exhibit “The Four Elements,” included four collage-paintings of David Wojnarowicz on wood and masonite painted in 1987—Wind (For Peter Hujar)Fire, Water, and Earth.

Michael Brenson’s review in The New York Times suggests the work’s “split between independence and inhibition creates a sense of two forces pushing against each other” and, comparable to the work of Jasper Johns, “gives the work much of their dreamlike, claustrophobic power.”
