The Whitney Museum, in New York City, has exhibited David Wojnarowicz’s work since 1982.
Early in David’s career, the Whitney included his work in two Biennial exhibitions: the 1985 Whitney Biennial displayed his paintings Science Lesson, 1982–83, and Attack of the Alien Minds, 1984–85. The 1991 Whitney Biennial included his late 1980s photographic “Sex Series,” and the mixed-media works He Kept Following Me, 1990, and When I Put My Hands on Your Body, 1990.
In 2018, the Whitney organized a major retrospective of David’s work, History Keeps Me Awake at Night. The exhibition ran concurrently with The Unflinching Eye: The Symbols of David Wojnarowicz, at NYU’s Mamdouha Bobst Gallery, and Soon All This Will Be Picturesque Ruins: The Installations of David Wojnarowicz, at P.P.O.W. Gallery.
Today, the Whitney holds close to 50 of David’s artworks in its permanent collection.
