University Galleries of Illinois State University

The University Galleries organized the first major museum retrospective of David Wojnarowicz’s work, in 1990. Curated by Barry Blinderman, the traveling exhibit included works from 1979 to 1989.

David’s performance kicking off the exhibition was met with an enthusiastic crowd of 700 people. He worked closely with Blinderman on creation of the show, published three prints with Normal Editions Workshop and created some of his last major paintings and photographs in a studio he rented in the area. The exhibition was not without controversy and led to David’s successful legal battle against American Family Association for defaming his work.

The catalog for the exhibition, David Wojnarowicz: Tongues of Flame, included the first instance of Untitled (One Day This Kid) later issued as a limited edition print.

Today, the University Galleries’ collection includes two of the three screen prints David produced at the campus’s Normal Editions Workshop, in 1990.
