The Library of Congress acquired David Wojnarowicz’s triptych, “Untitled (Peter Hujar),” 1987 from PPOW Gallery in 1991.
David’s friend and mentor, photographer Peter Hujar died of AIDS-related illness on November 26, 1987 at the age of 53. David was at Peter’s side in the hospital accompanied by friends Ethyl Eichenberger and Anita Vitale. As Anita guarded the door, David took photographs of Peter later assembled into the moving triptych, Untitled (Peter Hujar), 1987.
After Peter’s death, David also designed and created a National AIDS Memorial Quilt quilt panel for The Names Project Foundation. The Library of Congress houses the archival materials surrounding this work in The American Folklife Center.
