The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has David Wojnarowicz’s Untitled (Buffalo), Digital print Exhibition copy, 27 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. in its collection.
David created this image by photographing a diorama of buffaloes driven off a cliff at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. “The AIDS crisis was filled with individuals vulnerable to the whims and justifications of the hunter,” writes Anthony M. Sennett, The David Wojnarowicz Foundation Fellow, Fall 2023. “No longer based in communities seeking food for survival, these modern hunts served merely as a way to uphold crumbling belief systems. David and his peers were a herd moving into new territory, and the powers-that-be refused to allow this uncharted ground to be explored. His photograph isn’t made out of a desire to make amends with the animals, but instead to find kinship in the lack of agency they are given in their fate.”
Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is an innovative and compelling center of contemporary art where the public can experience the work and ideas of living artists, and understand the historical, social, and cultural context of the art of our time.
