Addison Gallery of American Art

The Addison Gallery of American Art, at the Phillips Academy, features three works by David Wojnarowicz: A Fire in My Belly (Film in Progress) 1986–1987, A Fire in My Belly (Excerpt), 1986–1987, and Untitled (Face in Dirt), 1990, a Gelatin silver print.

The Addison’s curators have incorporated David’s iconic photograph Untitled (Face in Dirt) into five of their own exhibitions: Secrets, Loss, Memory, and Courage: Works by Gay Male Artists; In Tandem: Inspirations and Collaborations; The Deception of Perception: Exploring Distortion and Ambiguity in Photography; Look at Me; and To Make Visible: Art and Activism, 1980–2000.

The gallery has also loaned this photograph to Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, at the National Portrait Gallery, and to the Brooklyn Museum, as well as to the exhibition Andrew Wyeth: Life and Death, at the Colby College Museum of Art.
