Cynthia Carr’s Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz tells the story of David’s life through the biographer’s firsthand friendship with the artist, interviews with his friends, family, and colleagues in the art world, and extensive research into his personal tapes and journals.
Carr shows how David emerged from an abusive childhood and from teen years spent homeless and hustling to become of the most important voices of his generation, and details how David found his tribe in New York City’s East Village—a blighted neighborhood with a burgeoning freewheeling art scene.
