The Downtown Collection of Fales Library & Special Collections at New York University was founded in 1994. The collection documents the downtown arts scene that evolved in SoHo and the Lower East Side during the 1970s and through the early 1990s.

Follow this link to the Downtown Collection Finding Aids which act as indices for collections. Here you’ll find: all of David’s journals from 1971-1991 digitized as well as digitized contact sheets dated 1984-1991.

Other collections relevant to David Wojnarowicz include:  Artists Space Archive, 1973-2009, Between C & D Archive, 1983-1990,   John Hall Papers 1977-1978, Ira Silverberg Papers,  and the David Wojnarowicz Papers 1954-1992 among others.

Among the David Wojnarowicz Papers are his journals, correspondence, manuscripts, photography, video and film, and audio works and more. Some of these materials have been digitized and are visible on the site. Others require an appointment to view in person.

The goal of the Downtown Collection is to comprehensively collect the full range of artistic practices and output of the Downtown scene, regardless of format or media—literature, music, theater, performance, film, activism, dance, photography, video and other art practices.

The collection includes the personal papers of artists, filmmakers, writers and performers; archives of art galleries, theater groups, literary agents and art collectives; and collections relating to AIDS activism, music, and off-off Broadway theater.
